Hortpark outing with L.A.B & manager!

Being an urban city, Singapore is geographically disadvantaged by her size. However, this flaw of hers is fully compensated by the enchanting serenity of nature.

11th of July, L.A.B(not so famous band yet) together with their manager, Sandra made a trip to Singapore's Hortpark. Being urban dwellers, nature walk is really an eye-opener!

Map of the day and our only map-reader, Miss A.

[Solemn]: Lu Zai

Lu Zai came over to stay with YZ for two weeks as his owners were out of town. When he came over, he was nameless. YZ named him Lu Zai, due to his physical resemblance of a deer. Being a miniature pinscher puppy, he’s only slightly bigger than a palm’s size.

The first night at YZ’s place, Lu Zai was kept in the courtyard. When Mou woke up in the middle of the night, he was shocked to discover a new room mate! Skinny Lu Zai had settled himself comfortably on Mou’s laundry bag, snoring away in his lalaland. Apparently, this smart chap had managed to sneak in through the kitchen’s back door and figured his way up to the second floor!

Lu Zai was also a fast learner. During my stay there, he learnt to respond to our callings and even managed to master commands like no, sit & fetch. I brought Junior’s baby toys over and gave Lu Zai a basket to sleep in. As most puppies love to have toys scattered all around the floor, I purposely littered the floor with new toys. To my amaze, Lu Zai actually went around the room, picking up all the toys and returning them back to basket. Unconvinced by this rare sight, I lifted up his basket and poured his toys all over the floor. Once again, I was dumbfounded. I tried this several times, until Lu Zai got impatient and rooted himself to his basket and ceased my prank.

When I returned back from JB and saw how Junior ill-treats his toys, I can’t help but compare Junior to Lu Zai. Lu Zai had protected his bed and toys and treated them as rare gems. Used toys, old t-shirt and a simple basket with rugged human clothes chipped in to provide warmth through the cold night. All these, were gems to him. Junior under comparison is a litter-bug, constantly waiting for his mummy to return his toys back to the toy basket. On a superficial level, Junior is deemed more fortunate. But, when we probe deeper beyond this level, some would feel Junior had lost a more precious gift called “cherish”.

Lu Zai was sent home ten days ago. On the 2nd July, his owners called to inform us that Lu Zai was gone. According to them, Lu Zai had died probably because the neighbor’s children fed him wrong stuff. Upon hearing this, my heart sank.

In the first place, which adult with a right mind working would entrust a 4 month old puppy to the hands of some underage daredevils? What is their harbored intention? Deliberate negligence that sounded accidental? Sorry if I sounded so harsh. Fore, their so-called 'negligence' costs a life, and it’s a pup's life.

Looking back, the two weeks stay at YZ place was probably Lu Zai’s gift from God. At least, he was blessed with the chance to experience unconditional family love. God had been fair to him, I’ve no more complaints. I just pray that mankind can be more responsible towards their pets, or at least, be humane.

To Lu Zai,

You left too sudden, without a chance to say goodbye. Gone so sudden, before I had the chance to even cry. But, don't frown my boy. You won't be forgotten even if time flies. For you've already left your prints right here, in my heart and mind.

Reviews

Some general web reviews on this product.

After reading through the reviews from the websites above, I gathered that this product is bowl licking good, as a result, some dogs are gaining weight! For skinny digs, this is great news. For obese dogs, owners are advised to be cautious, in prevention of over-feeding.
Grains vs. Protein
Overall, most reviews are appalled by this grain-free product. However, what is so great about grain-free product? Below is a sum-up about grains and protein (more info available here).

Grains provide mostly carbohydrates, with limited amino acid (protein) profiles. Extra carbohydrate intake, above the immediate needs of the dog (which occurs often with grain-based diets) prompts internal enzyme factors to store that extra carbohydrate (sugar) as fat.

Protein, being an energy producing nutrient, has a more important role in providing amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of tissue. As such, amino acids are necessary for the proper formation of skin, hair, muscles and the cells that make up many other organ systems. In addition, amino acids are used to make enzymes, which along with vitamins and minerals, are necessary for proper metabolism.
After Junior finishes his current Solid Gold Holistique, I will be switching to this brand. Heard that the market rate for this product is around 30-40 SGD per 2 kg. Pretty costly, but I suppose 一分钱一分货,if the result is good, it's worth it . Anyway, this product is currently available in Singapore's pet shops, those who are interested, do check out this website.
